Mr. John Sloan,
53 Washington Square,
New York City
Dear Mr. Sloan:
The Committee of your friends, of which I have had the delightful honor of being honorary chairman, has raised the full amount for the purchase of your painting "The Lafayette." It has been presented to the Metropolitan Museum and accepted by them with gratitude and, I am sure, a proper recognition of the artistic importance of the gift. The credit should go to the active workers on the Committee and especially to Mrs. Force. I have been only one of many contributors eager to honor you. Nevertheless I take great pleasure in the privilege of sending to you a check for five thousand dollars which it has pleased the Commmittee to send made out to me but which I have endorsed to your order. I am glad to have been associated with this fine tribute to you as a man and as an artist, and this enrichment of our greatest public gallery with one of your finest pictures.
Sincerely yours
DP.E
