Dear Mrs. Whitney:
Friends of the Young Artists within a few days is getting out the announcement for the painters' competition, which will take place the last of March or the first of April. As you know, Mr. Pietro, beginning with this competition, has decided to adopt your suggestion of dispensing with a jury and getting the pledge of various art patrons to purchase for such a sum as they are inclined to specify, the contribution they like best. Before the change in the policy of awards, Mr. Roland Knoedler had offered a first prize of $200, and Mr. Paul Reinhardt had promised $100 for the best figure picture and Mr. J. Sanford Saltus, $100 for the best landscape by an artist of foreign birth. I am writing to each to ascertain if he be willing to let his offer stand under the new ruling, as almost assuredly he will be; and I am writing to you to learn if you wish to continue your generous support, and in case you do, in just what form.
Your very truly,
Corresponding Secretary
